How He Does It: Tim Herron’s Keys to Making the Money Putts

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

Ranked fifth (as of 09/15/05) on the PGA Tour, Tim Herron’s success may be attributed to his incredible, clutch putting. While the PGA Tour putting average is an impressive 82.9%, Herron sinks a whopping 95.2% of his putting green shots. So, how does he do it?

Practice. “I probably spend about 80% of my practice time on the putting green, and most of that time is spent on short putts,” said Herron in an interview with Golf Magazine. “At the Buick Championship in August, I didn’t hit a practice ball all week. I just putted every day. That’s what makes you money—the putter.”

For golfers looking for a quick solution, Herron’s advice may seem daunting. But, with a home putting green, logging the practice time can be as easy as a half-hour of putting in your office during lunchtime, or relaxing after work on your own backyard putting green. Plus, by practicing at home, you’re not shelling out staggering greens fees just for some time on the putting green.

Encourages Herron, “If you know you can make the five-footers, then it doesn’t put any pressure on the 20-footers…[reliable putting] is a great Band-Aid. It can give you confidence and keep you going, which means you can stay more aggressive out on the golf course.”
